ACHS Students Take Part in Peaceful Demonstrations Across Campus

ACHS Students Participate in Peaceful Walk-Out Activities

On Tuesday, March 13th, Adair County High School Students took place in an organized Walk-Out in opposition to Gun Violence in schools in the wake of the school shootings at Marshall County High School in Benton, Kentucky and Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Weeks prior, student leaders met regularly with ACHS administration to discuss ways that ACHS students could actively, meaningfully, and safely participate in one of the scheduled walk-outs. The movement and conversations that were happening nationwide were also happening at Adair County High School, and student leadership wanted ACHS students to be a part of a positive force for change. Once students and administrators agreed on a time, date, and format, the event was scheduled. The students planned their campus activity with no gun protests, no political statements -- just a demand for safety.

Students were given the option to walk-out and participate in various activities outside including the release of balloons commemorating victims who lost their lives in the Parkland shooting. Students who remained inside were given the option to contact their legislators by phone, email, or social media posts and voice their opinions on gun violence in schools or to make condolence cards to send to the schools and families victimized by acts of violence.

“We are very proud of our students’ maturity throughout this process.” Adair County High School commented via the school Twitter account.
